President and Provost's Visit to CAS and AVAH Lab
AVAH Lab was showcased during the President and Interim Provost's visit to ComArtSci.
Specializing in the study of voice production, speech acoustics and auditory sound transmission.

The Analysis of Voice and Hearing (AVAH) Lab at Michigan State University conducts interdisciplinary research focused on understanding the mechanisms of voice production, speech acoustics, and auditory sound transmission. Our work investigates how variations and abnormalities in vocal anatomy and function influence voice production and contribute to voice disorders, with the goal of advancing objective approaches for studying normal and disordered voice.
Our research combines high-speed videoendoscopy, speech and acoustic analysis, signal and image processing, data-driven mathematical modeling, biomechanical and computational modeling, and artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques. These approaches allow us to study vocal fold dynamics, connected speech, neurogenic voice disorders, respiratory and phonation mechanics, and other factors associated with voice production.
The AVAH Lab also investigates auditory mechanics and sound transmission through the human auditory system using mathematical and computational models. By integrating engineering, communication sciences and disorders, imaging, acoustics, and data-driven methods, our research aims to improve the understanding, assessment, and characterization of voice and hearing mechanisms in both normophonic and dysphonic individuals.
